Euthanasia: Is it moral? The term euthanasia comes from ancient Greek and it means â€Å"easy death† (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Compared to the ancient times in which this word originated, it seems much harder in today’s society to achieve this epitome of a good death. In the ancient times, people died due to diseases that doctors could not cure, and their lives were ended earlier because it was considered cruel to watch a person die a slow and painful death. Today, thanks to the great advancement of technology, more and more diseases are becoming easier to cure and create a better living environment for the person affected. When putting the arguments for the affirmative and the negative side by side, one would see that euthanasia does in fact d evalue life. It deteriorates society’s respect for life because people could in theory pretend to be extremely sick and then have a doctor legally kill them. With the acceptance of euthanasia, society also accepts that some lives, as in those who would be candidates for euthanasia, are values less so than others, or the healthy and strong people in the world. As said earlier, there are two types of euthanasia; involuntary and voluntary. With the acceptance of voluntary euthanasia, there would be a slippery slope that would undoubtedly lead to involuntary euthanasia and the slaying of people who are considered to be objectionable. Then there is also the true thought that euthanasia may not actually be in the patient’s best interests. The patient could ask for euthanasia too prematurely, and if they are killed and the doctor realizes something could have been done, the blame would be placed on that doctor. As discussed in â€Å"Terrorism and Political Violence,† by Alex Schmid, there are multiple frameworks in which terrorism can be defined (Schmid 2010, 197). In Schmid’s article, he discusses the five ways he feels terrorism can be looked at, terrorism as/and politics, terrorism as/and crime, terrorism as/and warfare, terrorism as/and communication and terrorism as/and religious fundamentalism (Schmid 2010, 197). This is interesting because it explores the concept of terrorism in different lenses, where each has its own motives, its own background and its own participants. The actors self-absorbed, attitudes caused them to look fake and over-dramatic. As a last minute last hope effort, the director sent these five actors to, what he believes, is where the war actually happened. Soon after arriving to this unknown land, the director is blown up by an old land mine. The actors then find themselves trapped in a real life situation where they have to use their newly learned skills to survive being stranded in the middle of a dangerous drug triangle. This is certainly the case with The Prince of Tides. Pat Conroy develops each character and brings to life each member and associate of the Wingo Family. I was disappointed with many of the characters in the film. In the novel many of the characters had a huge role in developing the personality of Tom Wingo, whereas in the film these character were either excluded or merely mentioned as a quick reference or a mere memory. The novel focuses on the dysfunctional relationship between the members of the Wingo Family and the affects of those relationships in the adult lives of those family members. Tom Wingo takes a trip to New York City, from his home in Colleton South Carolina, to visit his sister Savannah Wingo who has attempted suicide for the second time. Also to assist her Doctor with information about her past that will possibly lead to the suppressed memories that has brought her to this point. It is during these sessions that Tom reflects with unabridged detail on his childhood from birth to present date. These recollections, in my opinion, are the most captivating part of the story that was extracted from the film. For example: The story of the birth of the Wingo twins. During a hurricane, Amos Wingo and his servant Sarah Jenkins sought shelter and helped deliver his grandchildren Tom and Savannah, and save them and their mother Lila from certain death. This was a brilliantly poetic way to bri ng to light the turmoil that will surround the lives of Tom and Savannah. This type of dialogue allows the reader to connect emotionally with each character and was unfortunately edited from the film.
